Sue’s new novel will be published January 7, 2014, by Viking, her first since 2005. A sweeping novel of hope, daring, the quest for freedom, and the desire to have a voice in the world, The Invention of Wings tells the entwined stories of Hetty “Handful” Grimke, an urban slave in early 19th century Charleston, who yearns for life beyond the suffocating walls of the wealthy Grimke household and the Grimke’s daughter, Sarah, a real-life historical figure, who grows up to become a leading abolitionist and women’s rights pioneer. The Secret Life of Bees debuted May 7, 2013 as part of a collectible new series of books from Penguin Classics. Known as Penguin Drop Caps, the series is composed of twenty-six hardcover editions of fine works of literature, each featuring on its cover a gorgeously illustrated letter of the alphabet. The series features unique cover art by Jessica Hische, a superstar in the world of type design and illustration. Penguin Drop Caps debuted earlier this year with an ‘A’ for Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, a ‘B’ for Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre, and continues with other perennial classics from Penguin.

Sue was presented with the Jim and Carol Ney Literary Award on October 20, 2012 at a black tie gala in the Atlanta area. The award is presented annually by the Cobb County Library Foundation “to honor extraordinary books and exceptional authors who not only enrich readers but move hearts and souls and change lives.”

For the tenth anniversary edition of The Secret Life of Bees, Sue wrote a first-time Introduction, in which she reflects personally on her surprise at the book’s success, on the experience of conceiving and writing the novel, on the film adaptation, and on the effect its vast community of readers has had on her life. To celebrate the 10th Anniversary of The Secret Life of Bees, Sue Monk Kidd will give away 10 signed copies of a new, keepsake edition, to be published November 23, 2011.
